Our History
The
center was inspired by the knowledge that homeless women
and children in Rensselaer County were severely
underserved. When the St. Paul’s church building became
available to St. Timothy’s in 2001, the congregation
voted unanimously to use the building for this ministry.
In
2004 St. Timothy’s was awarded a New York State grant of
$1.286 million to convert St. Paul’s into a 19-bed
shelter.
Renovations began in October 2005 and the Center opened
in October 2006. The shelter was almost immediately
filled to capacity, and continues to meet the needs of
women and children who find themselves homeless. A new
position was created in the Fall 2007 to
help alumnae of the shelter continue to be
self-sufficient and living in their own homes or
apartments.
We’re in the city for good!
